Basic Overview of XRPL

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a blockchain distributed ledger created by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto, and launched in 2012.

+ Fast and Affordable

XRPL uses a Confederated Consensus model instead of consensus methods like Proof-of-Work. This makes XRPL significantly faster and cheaper than most other blockchains. Speed and affordability are crucial for XRPL’s focus on payment systems, making it for more than only storing value. Read more about Confederated Consensus here.

+ The First Decentralized Exchange

XRPL could be argued to be the very first DEX. Trading with an XRP-token or token-token can be done over the XRP Ledger.

Natively, the XRP Ledger does lack some functionality users have come to expect from a DEX. Fortunately, Orchestra made it our mission to bring that functionality and more to XRPL.

+ Efficient and Carbon-Neutral

Confederated Consensus is eco-friendly, removing the need for computationally heavy competition. The energy consumed by the XRPL network is offset by carbon credits using Energy Web.

+ Innovation

Since its launch, XRPL has continued to grow and improve. The Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible sidechain, smart contract operability with hooks, and non-fungible tokens with NFTokens are just some examples of XRPL’s iterative innovation.

+ Decentralized and Community-Driven

XRPL is open-source. Anyone can view the source code to learn about or offer improvements to XRPL. A thriving XRPL community not only helps determine the future of the XRP Ledger, but welcomes anyone to events such as meetups and hackathons.
